What Is An Annular Tear?
An Annular Tear is a split or crack in the annulus, the tough outer ring of a spinal disc. The annulus surrounds the softer disc center and helps contain it. A tear may occur in the neck or lower back and can appear with disc wear, injury, or nearby pain symptoms.

Key Takeaways About Annular Tear
- The tear affects the disc’s outer ring.
- Imaging helps show its location and related disc changes.
- An annular tear is not the same as a herniated disc.
How Annular Tear Works

An annular tear affects the outer ring of a spinal disc. That ring helps hold the soft inner material in place. A tear can weaken the ring and may allow some inner material to push outward.
Related glossary terms: Disc Degeneration, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Lumbar Radiculopathy.
Magnetic resonance imaging can show the disc, its outer ring, and nearby structures. During a herniated disc evaluation, the finding is considered with symptoms, movement limits, and other imaging results. A tear may exist without causing the same symptoms as a herniation.
Disc degeneration can change the disc over time and may occur with an annular tear. Lumbar radiculopathy describes nerve-related symptoms in the lower back and leg. These terms describe related findings, but they do not mean the same thing.

From the Premier Injury Specialists team
When we review a herniated disc evaluation, we connect the imaging finding with the person’s symptoms and examination. We check whether the annular tear appears near the area of concern and whether other disc or nerve findings may explain the symptoms. That context helps guide the clinical assessment.
Annular Tear in Practice: A Real-World Example
A person with lower back pain may have imaging that shows an annular tear in a lumbar disc. The evaluation also considers leg symptoms, nerve findings, and any disc bulge before linking the image to the person’s condition.
